We Have 834 High Profile Graft Cases, Says DPP Haji

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecution has said they currently have 834 corruption-related cases that involve high ranking officials such as Cabinet Secretaries and Members of Parliament among others.

DPP Noordin Haji during a live webinar said that “if there was a dream for Kenya, that dream is to ensure that we live by the ideals of the Constitution.”

On behalf of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption, Twalib Mbarak said the Commission has adopted three strategies to curb corruption in Kenya.

The strategies include high impact investigation based on public interest, value loss, and personalities involved.

The second strategy will see EACC trace assets and recover corruptly acquired assets while their final strategy involves corruption prevention strategies.

“I wish to assure Kenyans that EACC remains steadfast and committed to the implementation of Chapter 6 of the Constitution. We will remain fair, firm and independent in execution of the responsibility that you have bestowed upon us,” said Mbarak.

This comes in the backdrop of several senior government officials who are currently facing corruption charges.

Migori Governor Okoth Obado, who is facing a murder charge in the killing of his girlfriend Sharon Otieno, was arrested after presenting himself to the EACC offices in Kisii.

Obado presented himself alongside his children with whom he is accused of fleecing Migori County Government of Ksh 73.4 million.

Another senior official in the EACC radar is Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru whose homes and office were raided by EACC detectives as they were looking for evidence linking her to irregularly paid travel allowances of approximately Ksh 23 million.

KEMSA CEO Jonah Manjari and two directors, Eliud Muriithi (Commercial) and Charles Juma (Procurement) were also recently suspended pending investigations into the organization.

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday fired a warning shot to Afya House, issuing a 21-day ultimatum for KEMSA investigations to be concluded.

Kenya Ports Authority Managaing Director, Daniel Manduku, is also under investigation for alleged procurement for the manufacture of concrete barriers at the Inland Container Depot, Kilindini Port and Makongeni Goodshed yard without a procurement plan.

He is accused of making an overpayment of over Ksh 244 million to the contractors for works not completed.

The Webinar provided an opportunity for key leaders from the National Assembly, ODPP, Office of the Attorney General, Judiciary, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and Transparency International Kenya to reflect on their respective roles and gains achieved in implementing Chapter 6 of the Constitution over the last 10 years.
