The employment of Governor Okoth Obado daughter at Migori County Level 4 Referral Hospital despite a Sh73 million corruption case against her sparked off uproar amidst calls demanding for intervention by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.
Evelyn Adhiambo has worked at the medical facility for nearly three months now as a doctor. Apparently, her secret employment remained silent until recently when cases of Covid-19 spiraled in the Nyanza region, leading to a county government staff questioning her professional background. The officer in question discouraged members of the public from entrusting their sick ones with the governor’s daughter.
Evelyn, her three siblings Dan Okoth, Susan Okoth, Jerry Okoth together with their father were said to be part of a larger conspiracy, according to Director Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji that fleeced the county a whopping Sh73.5 million through proxy companies.

When contacted, Governor Obado said there is nothing wrong with her daughter to assume the position since the cases against her were mere fabrications and instigated by his political rivals. “Joluo ofuwo kabisa. Nyara otimo ang’o,” (Luos are very foolish. How has my daughter done wrong?), he said on the phone. Migori public service board CEO Martin Arondo said the matter is not within their jurisdiction to investigate the family and criminal background of any employee cleared by relevant bodies. His text message read: “There’s no provision for interviewees to indicate names of their parents in the letter of application, hence, we don’t ask interviewees the occupation of their parents.”
Zachary Okoth Obado“We rely on chapter 6 document to clear candidates for interviews and I believe if a daughter of the governor was interviewed and subsequently appointed, we were fully guided by her compliance with chapter 6 and section 65 of the county government Act, 2020.” Arondo maintained that the process of employing Everlyn was competitive in all aspects adding that it was imperative to note that the board is an independent body.
However, some point out that the action by the board sharply contradicts its earlier position when dealing with the governor’s personal assistant Michael Oyamo. The board did not recommend the renewal of Oyamo’s contract ostensibly on the ground that he has a pending matter in court. Oyamo and Obado are the key suspects in the brutal murder of university student Sharon Otieno. The prosecution has lined up 37 witnesses to testify against the governor and the two in the murder. According to an earlier update by the office of the DPP on various murder cases, the Sharon trial will be held for 10 days consecutively from 5th to 15th of July.
