EACC Investigates MP Kiarie Over Sh500M CDF Tender Scam

Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie becomes the latest to be summoned by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission in the growing list of William Ruto’s allies facing criminal charges in what is seen as political persecution. EACC had sought to record statements with the lawmaker over allegations of corruption. Kiarie, who is one of the DP’s point-men in Nairobi politics, is being investigated over a controversial award of tender.

A letter in our possession reads in part, “This commission is investigating allegations of irregularities in the award of tender for construction work at Ndurarua Mixed Secondary School.” At the centre of the scandal is the six classrooms and administration block reportedly done by the constituency’s CDF fund in the financial year 2019/2020. The tender was awarded to accompany Mahindi Limited associated with his brother. It has been used to do suspicious contracts with CDF in the constituency.

Sources say, the firm has been paid over Sh500 million in contracts done and is always favoured in award and payments some even done before the work is done. The investigations are likely to trigger a fresh protest from the hustler nation camp which feels that its members are unfairly being targeted in the ongoing war against graft. Ruto has constantly condemned what he describes as the use of the criminal justice system to silence his lieutenants.

Ruto laments that the police, EACC and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations are under instruction to conduct a crackdown on any leader seen to be associating with him. The development has equally resulted in panic among Ruto allies. More than 30 MPs, senators and governors allied to the DP are now facing the possibility of jail term with cases in court or investigations at final stages.

Apparently, all are accused of criminal dealings ranging from corruption to fraud among others with some out of the net after appealing earlier convictions. Among Ruto allies in trouble are Meru senator Mithika Linturi and Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua who is on the spot over Sh12 billion believed to be proceeds of crime.

Also in the list are Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, former Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu and Dennis Itumbi who has a case to answer over the controversial Ruto assassination letter. Others are former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko, Sylvanus Osoro, Rashid Echesa, Henry Rotich, Samson Cherargei, Aisha Jumwa, Okoth Obado, John Waluke, Don Bosco Gichana, Moses Kasine, Irungu Kanga’ta among others in the rapidly growing list.
