EACC Detectives Storms Sonko’s Upperhill Office

Armed police officers have this afternoon raided the private office of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko located in Upper Hill Nairobi.

The police were reportedly carrying out an eviction order on the besieged Nairobi Governor who is said to be occupying illegally the property belonging to Kenya Railways.

Governor Mike Sonko has been using the Upperhill Offices after the Court banned him from the designated offices of the Nairobi Governor at City Hall.

The Upperhill Offices has been serving as his campaign headquarters and also used as the Sonko Rescue Team operation center for the last ten years.

In early 2019, EACC launched investigations on the controversial property reportedly belonging to the Kenya Railways pension scheme, terming it illegally acquired.

In his defense, Sonko said he acquired the property through the required legal procedures and he termed the investigations as malicious and only meant to intimidate him over his defiant position on the transfer of functions to the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS).

“I believe that the reports and alleged probe is malicious and maybe a move to intimidate me to go slow on some of the political and legal decisions I have taken in the last few weeks, specifically, my position on the transfer of functions to the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) and refusal to assent the Supplementary Appropriations Bill, 2020 into law,” he said.

According to sale agreements seen by the Kenyan Report show that Sonko’s family bought the property in the upmarket Upper Hill at Sh498.5 million.

EACC moved in to freeze any further transaction on the property after Sonko made a deposit of Sh144.6 Million as first installment of the first agreement.

The EACC claimed that among other issues, the commission was investigating where the governor got the sum to buy the property.

The EACC wanted the tender documents, minutes of the tender committee, sale agreements, payment documents, approved subdivision and the main title deed as they dug into the alleged sale of the property.
