A section of Garissa MCAs are a worried lot. Governor Ali Korane, a former district commissioner, has resorted to intimidating MCAs out to expose corruption within the administration that is said to be running into millions of shillings. One targeted is Jarajila ward MCA Mahat Osman according to sources. Korane has allegedly hired goons to harass and silence MCAs whenever they tour projects they have raised concern over the manner of implementation and dubious payments made. Weekly Citizen has information to the effect that five MCAs from Fafi were attacked by goons at Alinjugur where they had gone on tour of development projects that is said to have not gone down well with the governor.
Jarajila MCA Mahat Osman
The assailants reportedly injured a local television journalist who had accompanied the MCAs
together with a police officer who was offduty. According to a police report filed at Hagdera police station, MCAs Mahat Osman (Jarajila), Hassan Halane (Fafi), Hassan Omar (Nanighi), Yussuf Omar (Galmagalla) and Abdulahi Omar of Bura ward were attacked while at the Jarajila ward representative’s homestead. The attack was booked as a robbery with violence incident in the occurrence book. The leaders called on the police to carry out a thorough investigation into the incident. According to sources, the attackers are well known individuals close to Korane with a section of them being staff of the county.
Bura MCA Abdullahi Omar
They had hired a vehicle from Garissa town for the mission. The attacked scribe was Mohamed Moge who works with Star Television Network (STN), a Somali vernacular TV station. The MCAs have in recent weeks criticised Korane’s administration over what they termed as mismanagement of county funds. A week ago, the leaders claimed that flagship projects including a cancer centre, subcounty lodges, county headquarters, and 30 ICT centres amongst others, have stalled despite receiving funding. Implicated in the scandal is county secretary Abdi Sheikh who is said to be the brainchild behind the mega corruption at the county.
