Corridors Of Power

Professor Kagwanja: I Was Coerced To Support Because Of My Wife

With the dust settling after the Supreme Court verdict upholding the election of William Ruto as president-elect, some politicians are now coming out of their perceived political cocoons and revealing their preferred factions.

One such is Kenyan author and political commentator Prof Peter Kagwanja, who while appearing on KTN News on Wednesday morning revealed that he was among those who were in the Azimio la Umoja brigade for a season and a reason.

“The point made by president-elect William Ruto that there are some people in Azimio who were coerced is absolutely true. Some of us were in Azimio because we could not go into the opposition. My wife was in the Cabinet and I did not want to break my family because I’m in the opposition,” Kagwanja noted.

Prof Peter Kagwanja is married to Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma.

The political commentator added that most of the politicians lacked the freedom of choice and that most were afraid of political witch-hunt by their respective sponsor parties.

On April, 23 2022, Kagwanja announced bowing out of politics after he failed to clinch the Jubilee Party ticket to vie for Murang’a senatorial seat.

He said although he was not satisfied with the party’s decision, he accepted out of respect he has to the Head of State President Uhuru Kenyatta, arguing he would not vie for the seat as an independent candidate either.

“I will not vie as an independent candidate as many of my supporters are pushing me to do. I want to be out of politics and support development in the county,” said Kagwanja.
