Money: Grace Wakhungu Raises Sh500M Fine In Two Hours

It all seemed like doom for Grace Wakhungu after being sentenced to a probable 69 years in jail but she seems not to be a match for many. With close to a billion shillings in fines, Wakhungu has so far managed to raise Sh500 million which has already been forwarded as payment. According to sources, the money was raised in just two hours over a family meeting to save her from serving her remaining years in jail. Wakhungu expalined that the amount was obtained from a family account.

Grace Wakhungu is born in a family where 16 of her siblings are high ranking successful people in Kenya and Uganda with top notch lawyers, engineers, politicians, surgeons, journalists, educationists, athletes and diplomats. For starters, Wakhungu is the mother to Prof. Judy Wakhungu who is currently Kenya’s Ambassador to France. Secondly, former Vice President Moody Awori is her brother. They are children to the first Anglican Church of Kenya Canon, Jeremiah Awori.

In Uganda, her sister Aggrey Awori is a lead economist who in the past served as an MP and in Uganda’s Cabinet as a Minister. Dr. Mary Okello who was the founder and director of Makini schools and the first female manager at Barclays Bank is also her sister. The school was sold off a few years ago for over Ksh1 billion.

Another brother, Dennis Awori, is Kenya’s former Ambassador to Japan and a former chairman of Toyota EA, Managing Director of Lonrho EA, former chairman of Kenya Airways and also General Manager of CMC in Kenya and Uganda. He has also served in other companies.

Other siblings include Christine Hayanga, a lawyer married to Justice Andrew Hayanga, Henry Awori, one-time Kenya’s Commissioner of Insurance, Willis Awori, the HR Director at ICIPE, Engineer Ernest Awori, Winfred Odera, Margaret Openda, Wycliffe Awori and the Late Joshua Awori. Absa bank’s current CEO Jeremy Awori is her nephew.

Wakhungu who was sentenced alongside Sirisia MP John Waluke is likely to walk scott free some time in the coming days. Waluke is now on his own as he is facing 67 years in jail unless he pays the amounts. Their lawyers had filed a motion of appeal.
