Kenya Railways Chase Away Kisumu’s Upper Estate Tenants

The Kenya Railways has granted one week notice to renters of Upper Estate in Kisumu to evacuate their houses and pave way for redevelopment.

According to the State Corporation, the houses have been in a horrible conditions due to old age and lack of adequate sanitary facilities hence making them inhabitable.

Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga, in a notice released Thursday, stated that the estate will be redeveloped to a public market and subsidiary services.

“The intended use will rekindle the area, create jobs for the local citizens and energize economic growth in line with government’s Big 4 agenda,” read the notice.

Mr. Mainga further urged the tenants to adhere to the 7-day notice adding that failure to adjust will compel Kenya Railways to forcefully evict you and take over possession of the said house.

He added: “Kenya Railways shall not accept liability for any loss and damage whatsoever.”
