In an interview with Kalekye Mumo for K24 Digital that was aired on February 15, 2019, the celebrated Citizen TV news anchor confessed to having struggled with loneliness and depression after she divorced her first husband, Moses Kanene on January 7, 2016.
Their 7-year marriage ended on a sour note with Lillian, in the divorce case No 19 of 2016, stating that her ex-husband was adulterous.
“I went through different seasons. I surrounded myself with cliques and of course, I thought I could hide my pain by going out and having a good time but when you get home, the loneliness hits you hard emotionally,” she said.
It was during this particular phase that her infamous meltdown went viral, with thousands of Kenyans criticising her.
“I had a public meltdown. I screamed at someone at a restaurant and a patron recorded the entire incident which later went on social media,” she recounted.
“I had started to drink a lot when I left Josh’s dad,” she further explained.
Muli opened up that even though the relationship blissful at first, it reached a point where she felt strangulated.
It was after her highly publicized altercation that Lillian finally realized that she needed to work on herself, lest she slipped into a place where she couldn’t come back from.
“I got really immersed in church. I got very intense spiritually with God and I started reading a lot of books and attended self-help seminars,” she explained to Kalekye.
“I was in a very dark place but eventually I started getting out it,” she added.
Muli and Kanene had exchanged their vows in September 2009 at Windsor Golf Club in a pink and white themed wedding that was the talk of the town back then.
The mother of two (Liam and Joshua) went on to advise anyone going through a similar situation to face the problem head-on instead of trying to mask the pain.
