Rabbit aka Kaka Sungura is one of the best talents to ever come out of Kenya,his lyrical prowess places him above bars. He has earned himself a name and title in the rap scene not only in Kenya but the entire East African community. He even has international recognition,his song Kiswahili Shakespeare had its soundtrack used in an Hollywood movie and that came with royalties. Currently he is yet to sign a multi million deal with a top ranked recording label in Tanzania,this will see him partially relocate to Tanzania as he works on an album to abide by the deal. If signed,the deal will place rabbit as one of the most expensive acts in the region. But we rarely get to know these musicians at a personal level. Below are some of the facts gathered by Nairobi Exposed that will go to reveal some of the never known or rarely facts about Rabbit;
• He is a Muslim,converted from christianity.
•He started his career as a back up artist for rapper Chiwawa,he would join him on stage and be is hypeman,until one day when likes of Chiwawa was recording he tried his lines on and it worked(he used to be a cleaner at the studio in Westland)
• He doesn’t drink nor smoke,Rabbit stays sober. However,after the release of his first album,one day a friend invited him to the bar and pressurised to drink and since he doesn’t he defied until one reveller challenged him with a good offer,he was going to pay him sh.5000 for every bottle of beer he downs,with the promise of money he was not letting it go,he tried it out and lets just say he didn’t walk home,he was carried back home.
• He used to be a drug dealer,while in form two,Rabbit coming from a poor family resorted to selling weed to sustain his education,he paid his own school fee off the drug sales and lied to his mom he had a sponsor. As he was in school,Rabbit employed someone back at home to run his illegal business.
• He was an A student,just like his music tells,rabbit was a bright student and this a possible reason he resorted to illegal means to sustain his education whose future was being threatened by the lack of school fees from the parents.
•His international icons and artists he would have loved to work with includes Kendrick Lamar,JCole and JayZ. Locally he doesn’t have a specific favourite but he admits he is unbiased and will work with any artist as long as the artist is good at what they do.
•The song Dodoma was based on a true story. Betty the lady he talks about in the song was his girlfriend,she was a student at the university of Nairobi,she showered her with all kinds of gifts,she was super rich. She at one point travelled to Tanzania and sent a letter to Rabbit confessing that she is a robber and was this time going for the last mission and quit. Unfortunately she was murdered on that day during the robbery. Rabbit has been in touch with the family and recently paid them a visit in their Tanzania home.
