His style of leadership is unique making him stand much ahead of others and was the most voted for senator in the country with close to a million votes. Sonko is widely popular for his never ending philanthropic ways of sorting out the residents. Many at times he has been seen demonstrating alongside other residents in the various protests. • Defied shaving off his Mohawk
You must have noticed the senator has a mohawk hairstyle which in the view of his office stature is uncalled for. Despite calls for him to shave it off and maintain a decent hairstyle,the senator has defied and stand his grounds. The mohawk with dye drawn words in brown reads “peace” which the senator says signifies his stand in the nation.
• Jubilee power pillars
Sonko is one of the powerful men in the jubilee government,sources say he is close to the president and incase you want your issue given emphasis by the president you’ll need to sought Sonko’s intervention. Unknown to many Sonko was one of the government’s power brokers who struck the deal with hard nut KNUT to end the one month long teachers strike. Sonko was the president’s think tank and mouthpiece in the talks. He is untouchable amongst his peers due to his tight grips in the power circle.
• Running office
The senator according to sources indicates that he works extra times,goes to office early morning and late in the night. Its said this is as a result of many constituents who flock his offices on daily seeking audience with him and he prefers to handle their matters personally. Stats reveals that on a typical day he will attend to more than 1000 heads with different issues.
•Office no unnecessary restrictions
Unlike other offices with the same stature,Sonko’s office is said to be more liberal and never for dignitaries alone,visitors are said to arrive as early as 6 am at the kicc building where his office is located to line up in readiness to meet him as it works on a first come first serve basis. Then when he arrives,he attends and listens to their issues all day long,this extends to late hours.
• No cash on the spot anymore
He learnt I guess,in the past he could dish cash on the spot to all those who sought help from him. This earned him the Mr.Moneybags title. With time he realised some people weren’t genuine and took advantage by faking problems just to extort him. He however has come up with strict guidelines on how to offer financial help to the parties at hand. It must be a development oriental group,he then issues a check instead of cash. However its said he issues each visitor to his office a token of sh.1000 each as “fare”
• Spends over sh.5m on handouts
Sonko himself revealed that he spends way above sh.5m of his own money on his constituents per month,this goes to harambees,development projects,handouts and other philanthropic projects. This amount is above his salary as the senator.
• Has never received his salary
Ever since he assumed his role as the senator,Sonko has never received his salary. Reason being he vowed to channel all his salary into various developments across the city,true to the word Nairobi Exposed can reliably report that since assuming office the senator hasn’t received a single cent. All his earnings goes into financing different projects in the city.
